StackaRack Pledge Manager is live!

Posted on Friday Feb 03, 2023 at 05:00pm in StackaRack

Back in 2021, we ran a successful Kickstarter campaign for StackaRack - a customisable plastic rack for storing paints from all of the major miniature paint manufacturers.

With covid-related delays and other complications along the way, it's taken a little longer than originally expected to get the final product in hand. At long last, though, StackaRack is in our warehouse and shipping out to Kickstarter backers.

The Pledge Manager on Gamefound is open now to both original backers and late pledges. Late pledges are (unavoidably) higher than the Kickstarter pledge levels, due to so many of the costs involved in StackaRack production increasing over the duration of the project, but are still a saving on the expected retail price of £24.99 a box.

StackaRack Kickstarter Update!

Posted on Tuesday Nov 30, 2021 at 06:00pm in StackaRack

We've been working away behind the scenes to get everything finished for the StackaRack digital release. As mentioned in the last Kickstarter update, the STL files were delayed due to the plastics production requiring some last minute changes to several components. This has been completed and tooling is in progress, so now we're all waiting breathlessly until the test shots are done!

So far as the STL files go, as per the Kickstarter backers who pledged for the £10 'Digital Files' pledge will receive the STL files for all of the basic StackaRack components. This includes the main unit, clips and base, as per the picture below. These components are identical to the upcoming plastic version.

Backers of the 'Digital Plus Pack' will receive everything in the basic pack, plus the corner and some additional parts for easier printing or customising your rack. This will include:

  • some pre-stacked pieces with and without bases,
  • two versions of the base (normal length, and a shorter version to butt up against a wall) with solid undersides to reduce the need for supports,
  • pre-assembled corner pieces with and without the base,
  • a flattened version of the clip for neater printing,
  • a top shelf piece that fits onto an upturned base used as a lid, or can be glued to the top of the uppermost holder unit,
  • a clip-in adapter ring to allow the P3/Coat D'Arms/Reaper style pots to sit in more securely.

Most of these components print with minimal or no support. Along with the files, we'll include a printing guide with our recommendations for getting the best results for each part.

SO, where to now?

We're sorting out the final setup for the pledge manager and STL distribution. Once we have digital backers sorted out, we will be able to look at setting up the digital files for regular sale through the Maelstrom's Edge webstore while we wait for the plastics to arrive!

Kickstarter update: Tooling is good to go!

Posted on Monday Oct 18, 2021 at 06:00pm in StackaRack

We have a layout plan back from our plastics production people, and everything has been approved for tooling to begin. But the best news to come from this is that we've been able to squeeze the budget a little to produce the second sprue despite not quite hitting the stretch goal! This means that we can include the corner piece, which we had really, really hoped for as it adds so much flexibility to your StackaRack layouts.

SO, where to now?

With the tooling starting the component designs are now locked in, which means a few things can happen:

  • Over the next two weeks we will run some final print setting and support tests and work up some variant parts (like the multi-unit blocks) before releasing the STL files to digital backers at the end of this month.
  • Having the final sprue dimensions means that we can also finalise packaging plans, which will let us work out shipping costs for physical pledges.
  • Once shipping costs are sorted, we can launch the pledge manager, which will allow physical product backers to confirm their pledges, and also allow for late pledges from anyone who wants to jump in or add extras.
It's all coming together now!

If you have no idea what this is all about, you can find the StackaRack Kickstarter page here, or find StackaRack on Facebook here.

Almost there - so here's a bonus video!

Over the course of developing a product, you wind up with a few prototypes sitting around with nothing to do once the design has moved past them. So what to do with them?

If you're Iain, you turn them into terrain, of course!

Turning the corner - time's running out!

Posted on Monday May 03, 2021 at 03:42am in StackaRack

As the clock continues to wind down on the StackaRack kickstarter, we're continuing our work to develop and refine the parts. Shown below is a build using test prints for the 45 degree corner piece that is unlocked in the first Stretch Goal. This part allows you to bend your StackaRack around corners, which is great both for making best use of your desk space and also increasing stability, particularly on taller builds.

We're still some way off unlocking this stretch goal, and time is rapidly running out. It would be a shame to miss it, as the corner adds so much extra versatility to the kit but physically can't happen without the second sprue being unlocked. So if you've been considering upgrading your pledge, or undecided about sticking a toe in to start with, now would be a great time to do so! We need more backers to get behind the physical sprue pack pledges to hit the Stretch Goal in the limited time remaining.

StackaRack has funded - Help us reach the first Stretch Goal!

Posted on Saturday May 01, 2021 at 11:30pm in StackaRack

With the support of over 300 backers and counting, StackaRack has reached its initial funding goal!

The initial funding goal covers the amount we needed to produce the basic StackaRack components, but they're only the start of the story. The rack gets exponentially better if we can fund two sprues worth of components instead of one, with a better distribution of parts and the addition of the corner piece. The jump up to the first Stretch Goal is higher than the original funding target, though. This is because we used what funds we could to put towards the initial development, which meant that we could keep the initial goal much lower than it would otherwise have been. For the second sprue, though, we need to cover the full cost of producing that new tool.

We would obviously love to see that second sprue happen, and we hope that you do too. Help StackaRack turn the corner by backing the project now!

Fit StackaRack to your workspace!

Posted on Saturday Apr 24, 2021 at 04:23am in StackaRack

The greatest strength of the StackaRack design over other paint racks is its ability to fit into whatever space you have. If you have the space in your work area to dedicate to racking 500 pots of paint right there close at hand, StackaRack has you covered. (And let's face it, who doesn't love to see a wall of perfectly organised paint?)

But even (maybe even especially!) if you don't have much space, being able to configure the rack to suit yourself means that you can make the best use of that space. For example, if you're the kind of painter who tends to work on a single project at a time, rather than using up a whole lot of desk space for paints that you're not using right now, you can use StackaRack to build some storage just the right size to hold the paints that you are actively using right now.

The rest of the horde can be safely packed away, or held in a larger rack somewhere more suitable, where you don't have that pot of fluorescent orange staring at you accusingly the whole time you work ("Why did you buy me all those years ago, just to leave me here, still unopened? Why? Whyyyyy???")

Ahem.

This can also be a handy way to ease into your storage. Don't have the funds to rack all of your paint right now? Just grab enough StackaRack sprues to hold the paint for a single project, and then add to it as you go!

A massive thank you to everyone who has backed the StackaRack project so far. After the first day, we are almost halfway to the funding target!

Obviously, there is still a way to go, so be sure to spread the word! StackaRack needs as many people to get on board as possible to make it the best system it can be!

New Kickstarter from Spiral Arm Studios!

Posted on Monday Mar 22, 2021 at 05:00pm in StackaRack

Time for something new and different - Introducing the StackaRack!

We are currently working on a Kickstarter for a customisable plastic paint rack designed to hold any of the major miniature paint ranges - from the dropper bottles used by Vallejo and Army Painter, to the tall pots from the likes of Privateer and Reaper (and GW's old range), and the current stubby Citadel pots.

3D rendered serving suggestion

Paint collections have a way of growing organically, and most of the current paint rack solutions out there are fixed to specific configurations, and made for a specific type of paint pot. If you're like me, and collect multiple brands of paint, that can make organising them a little frustrating, and so we thought we would try to fix that.

Rendered for your convenience

The StackaRack was designed to hold any of the above mentioned pots comfortably, and allows for dropper bottles to slot in either way up, to suit your preference. Made from injection moulded plastic, it will fit together with locking clips, allowing you to build it how you like, and disassemble and reconfigure it as needed.

The Kickstarter is scheduled to go live on the 20th of April. You can find the prelaunch page here. Click the 'Notify me on launch' button for a reminder when the project goes live.
